Curling FAQ
- How much will a game of curling cost?
- It depends on what time of day you play. For Club members it’s £5.50 during the day and £8.30 in the evening.
- How long does a game last ?
- A game lasts about 2 hours but the tradition is that the winning team buys the losers a drink so you can add another 30 minutes to that.
- What should I wear?
- Loose fitting track suit type clothing with something warmer underneath is best. If you are sweeping a lot it can get quite warm and a layer that you can easily remove is ideal. Standing around during coaching can get chilly and the extra layer can then be very useful. If you join a club you will find that they have some kind of sweatshirt in club colours.
- How long does it take to learn to curl?
- A couple of coaching sessions, in total 2 hours, is probably enough to acquire the basics and begin to enjoy a game. Playing with others who are experienced is the best way to learn and any club will be happy to have you join in on some of their games.
- Will it be difficult to stay on my feet on the ice, I cannot skate?
- Curling ice does not have a wet or greasy surface so you should not find it difficult to keep your feet. When not playing your shot you will have a special gripper sole to help keep your balance. REMEMBER……Curling does NOT involve skates.
- Who can play?
- From around 10 years of age and upwards everyone can play. We have After School Clubs, Junior Clubs, Ladies Clubs Mixed Clubs and Wheelchair Curling Clubs.
- I don’t know if I can bend to the position I see them play when watching TV?
- Many people now use a “cue” or a curling “stick” This allows them to remain upright while delivering their stone. We can arrange for some coaching in this technique.
- What else is available at Lanarkshire Ice Rink?
- A large bar with a glass wall overlooking the curling rink. A full restaurant and an all day snack service. We also have squash courts, gymnasium, sauna and showers. Public skating and ice hockey are also available.
